Tainted TowersPrologue Marshwood Towers was doomed from its inception. This federal housing project was supposed to be built on the last available land on Hemlock Lake, land that had been designated wetland. To keep the locals and summer folks happy, Marshwood Towers would be a long, one-story U-shaped building that would not block anyone’s view of Hemlock Lake. ... The hopes and dreams were soon shattered. Marshwood Towers ended up being built half-way up the side of Mickmash Mountain on a granite ledge, two miles from the center of town! Half of the year the road was mud - mud so deep that many in the town swore that their cars totally disappeared during mud season and only reappeared when all the mud turned to dust. Every spring the dust would rise from the road like swarms of locusts, settling into the apartments like it was snowbird relatives back from wintering in Florida. No vehicles could travel this road for a few months every year. The handicapped couldn’t get down the mountain, and nothing, not cars, fire trucks, ambulances nor the U.S. Postal trucks could get up. |
