Campaign SightFirst was the most successful campaign ever undertaken by the Lions of the world. The goal of 133 million dollars was challenging to say the least but the Lions rose to the occasion, embraced this notable project and raised 143 million dollars to cure or prevent blindness throughout the world. The following illustrates what we wanted to do and what was, in fact, accomplished. |
| Unfortunately, despite our valiant efforts many people are still going blind. In addition to the diseases targeted in Campaign SightFirst many people, living longer, are going blind due to age-related diseases such as Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma and Cataract. The needs of those with low vision, uncorrected refractive error and childhood blindness have emerged as sight-threatening issues. It is imperative that such concerns as vision rehabilitation and education, research and vulnerable populations be addressed as well.
In order for this to happen, Campaign SightFirst II was begun and, once again, the Lions of the world have been asked to be the leaders in this fight against blindness. It was determined that an initial goal of 150 million dollars and a “stretch” goal of 50 million dollars would be needed to address the issues above.
